When IGTV launched in June 2018, creators and followers alike were excited to have another video platform to keep up on a brand. Since YouTubers can potentially bring in up to 5-7 figures, there was hope for making IGTV another source of income and being able to promote yourself.
Expectations don't always play out and IGTV has not been the success that many had hoped for. There are some critical issues with IGTV.
Normally, viewers don't consume video in a vertical format for longer than a 5 minute length. Horizontal videos are preferred if a video reaches longer than 5 minutes.
Content is also easier to capture in a horizontal format. Movies and shows are filmed horizontally, so it's easier and better to transfer to YouTube and other streaming platforms.
Instagram has not yet figured out a way to help creators gain the exposure they were hoping for. The IGTV features are still pretty much lackluster.
Now, here's my perspective about the push to create IGTV content. It's always better to be in on the ground floor. Start getting your followers accustomed to viewing your content there. Instagram has over 1 billion monthly users. They may be experiencing challenges currently, but they have too much to lose as well as gain with IGTV. This means that you have the potential to grow your channel and be positioned for the eventuality of an improved and revamped IGTV platform.
Here are a few tips for IGTV-
If you have less than 10,000 followers, you can create videos up to 10 minutes. More than likely, you won't be creating videos longer than 3-5 minutes.
Make sure to post only GOOD content. Write down bullet points and possibly create a script if this helps you to organize your main points. It will make for a better and more cohesive video.
You will have a link for each IGTV video, so share this in your Stories. If you have less than 10,000 followers you cannot share the link, but share a tidbit of the video in Stories and tell them to see the rest in your IGTV video.
Re-purpose the entire video in Stories. You can do this by cutting the video in an app like Storeo. It will edit your video into 15 second slices and will appear almost seamless.
Video content is going to be extremely important in 2019. According to Cisco, 80% of global Internet consumption will be video content. Keep up with the flow by being prepared for next trends and marketing tools that will give you an edge on your competitors and peers.
