Why You Must Add Video Creation to Your Instagram Content Strategy

Video is quickly becoming the most consumable content on Social Media. This signifies for content creators the urgency to start creating videos if they are not currently producing them for their platforms and clients.

Video posts on Instagram receive 38% more engagement than image posts and time spent watching video on Instagram is up more than 80% year over year. One out of 4 Instagram ads contains video. Marketers and brands realize that reaching their clients now also requires producing video content. Instagram has over 1 billion active monthly users and 500 million daily Stories users!!!

IGTV may still be a bit slow to take off, but Stories are HUGE and Instagram Lives are extremely popular!!! You have the ability through video to reach people on a more intimate level than you can through an an image or graphic. Many times, people need to see you and HEAR you in order to really feel they both know and trust you.

For small brands, it can be overwhelming to figure out what videos work best and how to create dynamic videos that will capture their followers and customer's attention. Today, fortunately there are so many tools that you can use to create product videos without really any video or design experience. However, if you are a personal brand and want to start creating videos, where do you begin?

Recently, I ran a 3 Day Video Challenge on Instagram. #iamawesomeonvideo3daychallenge. The purpose was for me personally to become more comfortable in front of the camera and to also inspire others to do the same. I was surprised at how well received my challenge was and how supportive people were. Doing this challenge really pushed me to get the videos out to my followers and definitely helped me gain more confidence in talking to the camera ( iphone).

Doing the video challenge has not made me a rock star yet with video, but I feel that I will keep progressing and improving on the quality of my videos and hopefully others that viewed them will feel the same.

Here are a few tips for getting started:

  1. Record your first videos alone in a quiet setting. You will be able to focus more on your delivery and won't feel so intimidated, if you no one is watching you!! You can always share a look at your recording for feedback when you're finished.

  2. Don't worry about stumbling or that you will look stupid. (Done that already and it's not helpful) Just set up your phone and push "record". You can always edit or start over. If you don't have a tripod, find a prop in your home or film in your car. Some of my most viewed videos were filmed with me right in the drivers seat. ( I wasn't driving of course:))

  3. Make sure you're in a room with enough natural light or film outdoors in a quite spot.

  4. You don't need a lot of expensive equipment to record your videos. All you need is your phone! You can always add other pieces of equipment you'll need later. The key is to get comfortable with recording and seeing yourself on camera first!

  5. Practice Practice Practice!! I think about the content I want to talk about and practice it still usually before recording. That way my message is more cohesive and contains less rambling.

Getting started creating video is always the most difficult part. Yes, you will probably stumble a bit, but that's all in the learning process. The goal is to stay relevant on social media to capture the most attention possible for your brand and ultimately create income or drive sales.
